Polska prowincja początku przełomu lat 50 i 60. XX wieku. Magdalena, warszawska aktorka teatralna, przyjeżdża do rodzinnego miasteczka na pogrzeb dziadka. Choć na pozór wydaje się, że czas się tutaj zatrzymał, bohaterka szybko przekonuje się, że miejsce, które dotąd wydawało się jej stałym punktem świata – już nim nie jest. Śmierć dziadka zmienia relacje z gosposią Wiktorią, niegdyś bliską, a teraz zaskakująco obcą. Do opuszczonych przez zmarłego pokojów ustawia się kolejka chętnych lokatorów… Jedyny jasny punkt tej pożegnalnej wizyty to spotkanie z poznanym w pociągu młodzieńcem, Olkiem, wyraźnie zafascynowanym piękną aktorką.
Adaptacja opowiadania Jadwigi Żylińskiej. Komedia sentymentalna – jak nazwał ją sam Has – i kolejna w jego twórczości gra melodramatycznymi konwencjami, gdzie za gatunkowym kostiumem kryje się podszyta melancholią opowieść o przemijaniu, niemożności powrotu do przeszłości, poczuciu samotności. Kameralne kino stanowiące wizytówkę stylu reżysera, z Lidią Wysocką, gwiazdą przedwojennego kina i Władysławem Kowalskim, nowym aktorskim odkryciem Hasa w rolach głównych.
According to Has, it’s a sentimental comedy. It doesn’t have a climax point. However, it takes away illusions connected with the past and hope for the future. Magdalena (Lidia Wysocka), having returned home for her grandad’s funeral, found out that she will lose an inherited property. The town’s authorities will be the new owner of the property. Her shocked relatives and bold servants push Magdalena into realizing their dreams connected with the beautiful house. The subtle and elegant woman surprisingly wants to spend her time with a nice, local boy. His name is Aleksander (Wladyslaw Kowalski). He’s a pilot at the local gliding club. Has, as he usually does, creates a feeling of melancholy very well. Almost each film character feels it. The night that Magda and Aleksander, people from different worlds and generations, spent together stops time for a while in its inevitable passing thanks to tender intimacy. It was their first and last meeting. Similarly to 'Farewells', the action of the film is announced by a song – 'An Evening Guest Song' sung by Slawa Przybylska, music performed by Lucjan Kaszycki. The characters of the film hum a hit from another Has’ film 'Remember? It was autumn'. Jadwiga Zylinska, a writer, the author of the screenplay, wrote a short story entitled 'Goodbye to the Past' in the 'Wild Birds' volume (1962).
